Policy Analysis and Advocacy Training for Community-based Participatory Research Practitioners

July 10 (Portland) and July 11 (Eugene)

Public policies have an enormous impact on our personal health and well-being, and that of our communities.Community-based research partnerships are uniquely qualified to devise and propose healthy public policies. In this half-day training CBPR practitioners will learn how to design a policy change project from the ground up, as well as, how to use completed research to impact policy. Cassandra Ritas, MPP will present an overview of policy analysis and advocacy techniques, and discuss their application in the partnership context. Ms. Ritas is a Kennedy School graduate, who has worked extensively in partnership and in government, as an advocate and policymaker.

Participants will discover how to view health problems with a policy lens, how to identify policy barriers to health, how to design original research to fill gaps in knowledge, how to identify policy alternatives, how to choose among policy alternatives, and how to advocate for change. Through case examples, we will explorethe strengths that CBPR partnerships bring to this work. Participants will be introduced to tools that will facilitate the planning and discussion of policy change initiatives. We will discuss the particular challenges faced by partnerships engaging in the very public work of policy change, and some strategies for meeting these challenges.

This training is designed for current CBPR practitioners and those interested in forming community-research partnerships around identified community concerns. Following the training, David Rebanal, MPH, NWHF Program Officer, will introduce the 2008 Northwest Health Foundation community-based participatory research grant opportunities and take questions. The request for funding proposals for the 2008 grant cycle will be available at this time.

There is no cost to attend, but space is limited and registration is required.
