Stimulus Bill to Include Investment in Public Health

Did you know that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (HR 1), commonly referred to as the economic stimulus bill, contains some important public health funding?

The bill includes $3 billion for public health and prevention that will assist state, local and community-based programs that work to prevent disease and reduce the health care costs associated with treating many costly conditions and diseases. According to the American Public Health Association, funding will also strengthen immunization programs, provide training and education to our public health workforce, increase efforts to combat the impacts of environmental factors on public health and strengthen efforts to reduce injuries and occupational-related injuries.

APHA also reports that a recent study by the Trust for America’s Health found that for every $1 spent on proven community-based disease prevention programs, the country could net a return of $5.60 in health care costs within five years.

In addition, funding is included for training primary health care providers, improving and expanding the services provided by community health centers, improving health information technology as well as for critical safety net programs including the Medicaid program and food stamp program.
