Cost of Overweight and Obesity in U.S: $270 Billion Per Year
This figure is provided by the Society of Actuaries in a new study. Most of the costs result from the increased need for medical care, but other areas include the loss of worker productivity from early death and disability.
The findings are based on a review of papers published primarily between January 1980 and June 2009.
“We can’t stand back and ignore the fact that overweight and obesity are drivers of cost increases and detrimental economic effects,” said study author Don Behan.
