Diabetes: What’s rice got to do with it?
A recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine makes a direct connection between the consumption of white v. brown rice and the risk of developing diabetes.
Those who eat white rice on a regular basis — five or more times a week — are almost 20 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who eat it less than once a month.
Community Health Priorities focuses on systemic and policy influences on health - recognizing that communication at the individual level is not enough.
Is there systemic issue at play here?
One question we might ask is can - and should - cultures that rely so much on white rice in their every day cuisine, begin the process of re-discovering the unprocessed form of this important grain?
